If you are planning a traditional wedding in Britain, and you are keen to see to all the details while remaining within a budget, one thing you will have to consider early on is the florist bill.
Flowers can bring so much to a situation or event. Think of a garden with nothing but a well tended lawn, and then think of the same garden with an abundance of flowers round the edges of that well tended lawn. It becomes a completely different garden. Or, if you are planning to have your wedding in a church, think of an empty church, and then think of that same empty church but with large arrangements of flowers on the window ledges and at the ends of each pew. The church without flowers may seem old and austere, but with flowers the church is most definitely ready for a wedding.
Flowers add decoration, colour and fragrance, but they also bring a bit nature into an indoor setting, along with a sense of aliveness.
The only problem is, once you start thinking about all the possible uses for flowers at your wedding, it may be hard to stop.
To begin with there is the obvious and essential use for flowers: the bouquet. And not only a magnificent bouquet for the bride, but also several slightly smaller (though equally important) bouquets for the bridesmaids. Also you mustn't forget the buttonholes for the important male guests, and have you thought about weaving flowers in the hair of the younger bridesmaids?
Then there is the church or service hall, and this will probably be followed by a reception room that will also be in need of floral decoration. In addition, the dining tables might need small arrangements at the centre of each.
The table arrangement is one of the simplest things to get right, and with a bit of flair you won't need to spend much money. One idea might be to have paper flowers. I know this may sound like a bit of a compromise, but good paper flowers made from quality tissue paper can sometimes look even nicer than real flowers. Obviously they don't smell as nice, but if you have real flowers elsewhere, nobody will mind.
If you want the table flowers to match the rest of the flowers, however, you may need to add this to the florists to-do list.
So in all, you might be looking at a rather hefty florist bill if you're not careful. This is why it is important to plan the flowers well in advance and to shop around. Also, do some research into the costs of different plants. Good flower arrangements often contain foliage as well as flowers, and the right foliage can be very tasteful and can also make your arrangements go a lot further. Make sure you discuss all this with your florist, so that hopefully you will get the sort of effect you are looking for, without having to go over budget and break the bank.
