With so many window sign options to choose from, it is sometimes difficult to understand which material is the best fit for your needs. The majority of window signs fall into two categories: decals and clings. Knowing the differences between these materials is the first step in designing your sign and making the right decision with your purchase.
Vinyl Decals
What are they?-Vinyl Decals are heavy-duty stickers. Vinyl is a thin, glossy, weatherproof plastic film that adheres to glass, metal, and plastics. Standard vinyl signs have a full-color solid design on one side and adhesive on the other.
Pros-Vinyl decals are ideal for outdoor use because they are UV-resistant and weatherproof. They are designed to last over long periods of time and can be placed on almost any surface. You can also choose unique options like lettering, shapes, inside glass, and clear vinyl.
Cons-Vinyl decals are designed to be a semi-permanent window sign. They can be difficult to remove, but itis possible. Once they are removed, however, they are not reusable.
When to use them?-If you are looking for long-term business signs, store hours, or outdoor window signs, vinyl decals are the perfect material for you.
Window Clings
What are they?-Window clings are a thin, plastic vinyl film that "clings" to the window using static electricity instead of adhesive. Also known as static cling, they will cling to any glass surface. Using water is generally-recommended for a better installation. Standard window clings have a full-color, solid design and can cling from both sides.
Pros-Window clings can easily be removed, stored, and reused. Both sides of the material cling to glass so they can be placed inside or outside a window or mirror without special printing. They can be printed in any size, from small window stickers to large promotional signs. You can also find unique options like shape die-cutting and clear static clings.
Cons-Static window clings are not weather-resistant because they have no adhesive to secure them to the window. Over time, window clings can begin to lose their cling abilities and may need to be re-installed or even replaced.
When to use them?-Window clings are best for temporary signage (i.e. for promotions and sales). Other great uses for window clings are wedding signs, branding decals, and promotional business stickers.
Choosing the best material is all about knowing your needs. If you want something short-term that is easy to remove and can be reused, choose window clings. If you want something low-maintenance that you can stick on your window and never have to worry about again, choose vinyl decals.
